Complex Systems

The CS research team, led by A. Omar, focuses on the development of simulation tools and techniques for complex systems.

In fact, simulation-based engineering science has been recently proposed as a way of testing virtually complex systems before their industrial prototyping and deployment. It is considered as an integral part of the system development process allowing scientific and technological innovation and discovery in many areas. However, several issues have to be tackled, among them are:

  • Management of massive amount of parallel simulations of separate computer-aided engineering tools, such as Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Lack of post-processing and interoperable tools and co-simulation framework to extract performance measures from massive simulations data.
  • Absent of the platform that integrates the increasing number of simulation tools.
  • Simulations use complex mathematical algorithms, which are computing intensive and unreliable.
The CS’s team members are investigating:
  • Existing software framework and tools for engineering and operating these types of systems.
  • Parallelization and scheduling techniques to exploit in a transparent way the parallelization of these software tools.
  • Applications on different domains, such as energy efficient buildings, advanced materials, automotive and space engineering, and electro-mobility.
