Overview
The Sahel MENASA Summer School offers a specialized course on the Sahel to provide a deeper understanding of:
- The dynamics of political violence,
- The rise of armed organizations with different ideologies,
- The rivalries between international and regional actors contributing to the securitization of the region,
- The new realities of climate change and its impact on livestock farming, pastoralism, and agriculture.
The program distinguishes between three dimensions of the Sahel, all of which are crucial to analyze in a time of escalating violence and the transnationalization of conflicts, particularly in the Liptako-Gourma region (Central Sahel):
- Geographic Sahel
- Institutional and Political Sahel
- Security Sahel
Additionally, the course aims to rethink security by analyzing various security regimes, a crucial topic in the wake of the 2013 French military intervention. The Sahel is at a security crossroads, threatened by polyhedral actors navigating between organized crime and struggles for ethno-territorial control.
