LERMA in Brief


LERMA’s research activities are oriented towards the design and the development of smart materials, structures, and systems used in aeronautical, automotive, and energetic technologies. It mainly hosts the research activities conducted by faculties and research scientists from four engineering schools: AERO, AUTO, ESIE, and ESIN. Researchers and scientists are mainly developing methods and tools that are required to design large-scale systems with strong ability to learn, adapt, and self-organize, i.e., the system keeps evolving by redesigning its structure and its behavior to best suit its context. In fact, with recent advances in miniaturized micro systems, it is now possible to develop systems capable to sense their environments and react accordingly. Furthermore, research in smart materials is progressing toward developing systems having adaptive engineering functions and evolvable operational capabilities. These main advances (e.g., smart materials, nanotechnologies and communications, AI) allow developing smart systems able to react to their environments. For instance, advanced and smart materials/systems in a building could automatically respond and adapt to current and predicted situations (e.g., occupancy, weather, loads).
The Lab’s research activities will contribute to this emerging research, which has an immense potential in many domains of applications like aerospace, automotive, biomedical, buildings, and energy systems. These activities fall mainly on three main research areas, which constitute the Lab’s scientific skills and expertise: Energy and Environment, Mechanics and Materials, and Design and Engineering Complex Systems.
